EFF chapters are student-led: trained officers, a faculty or staff advisor, and the EFF Bylaws. The first was chartered at Florida A&M University on 7 September 2024.

The chapter founder pathway
From application to chartered chapter.
Chartering takes time on purpose. A chapter that launches trained and recognized is a chapter that lasts after its founders graduate.
Apply
Send the Chartering President application. No MyEFF account needed. Your recommenders are emailed a form, and you choose your interview time. You are not yet an interest group or an EFF chapter, so please don't recruit or post yet.
Interview
Meet National on a video call, from a computer with your phone beside you. You hear back in one to three business days.
Conditional approval
National approves you to begin: your $20 Chartering President commitment fee, Rooted founder training, your board application link, a temporary chapter email and National vetting your advisor.
University recognition
Your campus recognises your organization and you upload the approval in MyEFF. National then charters the chapter.
Cleared to recruit
Every required office filled, every officer trained and their commitment fee paid, and your advisor vetted. National clears you to recruit members and open a chapter bank account.
Campus ambassadors
No chapter yet? Represent.
Ambassadors represent EFF, connect students to resources and serve under the National Office or alongside an existing chapter.
Leadership training
Trained before serving.
Under the EFF Bylaws, chapter officers complete training before they operate. EFFective Learning in MyEFF holds the courses, the knowledge checks and the certificates.
