EFF chapters are student-led: trained officers, a faculty or staff advisor, and the EFF Bylaws. The first was chartered at Florida A&M University on 7 September 2024.

Apply as a Chartering President. You don’t need a MyEFF account to apply, and National reviews every application.
The chapter founder pathway
From interest group to chartered chapter.
Chartering takes time on purpose. A chapter that launches trained and recognized is a chapter that lasts after its founders graduate.
Interest group
Submit the Chartering President application. You may build interest, identify supporters and connect with potential founding members. You are not yet an official EFF chapter.
Conditional approval
If National advances your application, you receive written next steps: build your founding team, complete required leadership training, prepare bylaws and apply to your university.
University recognition
When your campus confirms your organization, you update National through MyEFF and upload the approval.
Full active chapter
National verifies every chartering milestone, including training, advisor confirmation and governance documents, and confirms launch clearance in writing.
Campus ambassadors
No chapter yet? Represent.
Ambassadors represent EFF, connect students to resources and serve under the National Office or alongside an existing chapter.
Leadership training
Trained before serving.
Under the EFF Bylaws, chapter officers complete training before they operate. EFFective Learning in MyEFF holds the courses, the knowledge checks and the certificates.
