The Peace That Guards

Philippians 4:4–13 · Anxiety, gratitude and contentment

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

Philippians 4:6 (KJV)

Before you start

Paul writes to the church at Philippi while imprisoned. He has known need and plenty. His famous words "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (verse 13) are about contentment in every circumstance, not winning every game.

Read Philippians 4:4–13 aloud from any translation. Invite volunteers to read; never put anyone on the spot.

Icebreaker · 5 minutes

Name one small thing you're grateful for today.

Observe · what does it say?

  1. What does Paul tell the Philippians to do instead of being anxious?
  2. What will guard their hearts and minds (verse 7)?
  3. What has Paul learned about having much and having little (verses 11–12)?

Interpret · what did it mean?

  1. Paul wrote this from prison. How does that change the way we read "rejoice"?
  2. What does verse 13 mean in its context?

Apply · what does it ask of us?

  1. Turn one worry into a prayer with thanks, right now.
  2. Where do you need contentment this semester?

On your campus

Hand out "Prayer + Thanks" cards: one side for a worry, one side for something you're thankful for.

Closing prayer

God, we bring You everything, with thanks. Guard our hearts and minds, and teach us contentment in plenty and in need. Amen.

Take home

Each night, write one worry and one thing you're grateful for.
